Obelisco

The human being stands at the centre of Edi Carrer’s poetic research. For years, the artist has explored human suffering, indifference and the incurable sense of superiority that humanity holds toward life and others. His work seeks to reveal what he defines as the “miserable existence of the human species.”

From this condition arises his use and choice of black. The black of marble in his sculptures, or of ink in his drawings, is the black of nigredo — the darkness of the inner night — a concept that Jung associated with the individual’s confrontation with their shadow self. Yet black is also the colour of mystery and elegance, emerging in the finished forms.

In Obelisco, created during the 7th FVG Sculpture Symposium, many elements of his thought can be recognised. Smooth, symmetrical and balanced forms emerge, yet they seem to have lost their function, standing like totems now deprived of meaning and power.

Edi Carrer

Born in 1974 in Pordenone, Edi Carrer lives and works in Pietrasanta (Lucca). Sculptor, painter and engraver, he began experimenting with painting at an early age as a self-taught artist.

In 1996 he participated in his first group exhibitions of painting and engraving, while continuing his search for a new expressive language. In 1998 he moved into the third dimension, initially choosing wood before definitively embracing marble.

Since 1999 he has taken part in numerous international sculpture symposia and contemporary art exhibitions in Italy and abroad. In 2001 he was involved in an artistic project in Mexico City, and in 2012 he was among the selected artists for Sculpture by the Sea in Australia.

He has been invited to create monumental works both in Italy and internationally, including sculptures placed at the Rectorate of the University of Udine and in the Principality of Liechtenstein. His works are held in public and private collections.
