Portatrice d’acqua (Water Bearer)

The bas-relief technique on hard stone, widely used in classical art, is one of the most demanding challenges for a sculptor, especially when the chosen subject is the nude.

De Peuter’s female figure, executed without avoiding any technical difficulty, represents a courageous challenge that honours the artist. Many of the issues inherent in the technique are resolved brilliantly, particularly in the upper section and above all in the frontally exposed face.
