Reana
The Permanent Exhibition of Corn Husk (scus) and Wicker, located in the former primary school of Reana, together with the Rojale Showcase in Remugnano, are two important exhibition spaces dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditional craftsmanship of scus weaving.
This craft experienced remarkable growth and gained significant recognition in the Rojale area during the 20th century.
The management of these spaces and the safeguarding of the scus tradition have for many years been entrusted to the Pro Loco del Rojale, an association established to promote the territory and its unique cultural heritage.
In 1964, the Cooperative of Friulian Corn Husk Artisans was founded in Reana del Rojale thanks to the commitment and initiative of Don Mario Fabrizio.
The craft began as a response to difficult economic conditions during the slow post-war recovery. Ingenuity, abundant local raw materials and especially women’s creativity were the key factors that allowed the art of scus weaving to flourish and even expand overseas.
Entire families contributed to weaving bags and baskets; even children enthusiastically helped to earn a small income.
As the craft became more widely known, artisans diversified production: fashion accessories, bird nests, nets for San Daniele hams, tableware items and high-quality objects combined with leather, fabric and metal.
The scus dolls were particularly successful, often depicting traditional rural professions. They gained popularity both abroad and among emigrant communities.
Alongside scus, wicker weaving also played an important role in the history of the Rojale. Thanks to inherited weaving skills, artisans produced baskets, cradles and many everyday objects.
The Permanent Exhibition houses more than 300 handcrafted items in scus and wicker, offering visitors an opportunity to discover both the historical tradition and contemporary artistic creations.
These products can also be purchased at the Rojale Showcase in Remugnano. The Rojale Showcase celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2023.

The Showcase also periodically hosts exhibitions by local artists, providing them with a space to present their work and promote their creativity.
